Statue of Athena

  • Raeder #: 53
  • Collection: Rome, National Museum
  • Inventory #: 595
  • Provenance: Found 1913/14 in the "Great Dining Hall with three exedrae" (R. Paribeni, NSc 1922, 238 Nr. 1 Figure 5)
  • Material: Marble
  • Dimensions: Height: 1.25 m
  • Condition: Augmented is a small patch on the left lower arm.
  • Discussion: A reproduction of the Vescovali type that highly simplifies the prototype's system of folds. The head used to be turned toward the left shoulder, judging by the surviving remains of the shock of neck hair. The prototype may be roughly contemporary with the statue of Sophocles (340/30). Another reproduction of this type comes from the same discovery site (Cat. I 69).
